Jenkinson’s Aquarium Tanks, Point Pleasant Beach NJ

Sunken pirate ship mural by Paul Barker of Googleplex at Jenkinson's Aquarium on the Boardwalk

Jenkinson’s Aquarium is privately owned and is the primary attraction of Jenkinson’s Boardwalk, an old-fashioned tourist attraction at Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. It’s small by comparison with municipal and state-owned aquariums, but its staff is as professional and dedicated as any. The story of what they went through to save the creatures under their care during Superstorm Sandy would make a hard man weep. Great people to work with.

I’ve had the good fortune to work with them since 2002, doing background murals for three of the big tanks. It was my first experience with large murals that would be submerged and my first large-scale use of epoxy (what a difficult medium!).

I borrowed the image of the sunken pirate ship from the Disney movie (one of my all-time favorites), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Other underwater murals include the coral reef and an Atlantic coast mural with pilings from an overhead pier.
